FM-A1.1 provides a metric for the nature and use limitations of the access protocol. Access to a resource may be limited by the specified communication protocol. Protocols that are closed source or that have royalties associated with them could prevent users from being able to obtain the resource. To fulfil this metric, the following must be provided: i) A URL to the description of the protocol, ii) true/false as to whether the protocol is open source, iii) true/false as to whether the protocol is (royalty) free. This metric applies to part A1.1 of the FAIR Principles.
The source of this description is the metadata record on FAIRsharing.org, an educational and informative resource that describes and links databases, standards, and data policies. FAIRsharing also creates collections of these resources and recommendations of databases and standards based on 3rd party data policies.
