Quarterly Notes of the Geological Survey of New South Wales
A drilling programme of four fully cored diamond drill holes was carried out west of Boggabri to assess the coal resources of an area proposed for urban development. The following formations are present in the area: the Black Jack Formation, the Porcupine Formation, the Watermark Formation (?), the Maules Creek Formation, and the Leard Formation. Basement is a basic volcanic rock similar to the Werrie Basalt. It was determined that only thin coal seams, of no economic value, are present, and the urban development programme well not sterilize any commercially mineable coal.
